Surgeon's Fee
This covers the surgeon's time and expertise performing the procedure itself. It's usually quoted separately from the facility fee.
Facility Fee
This covers use of the operating room, equipment, and supporting staff — nurses, surgical techs, and recovery room care. Facility fees are typically the largest single line item and vary the most between a hospital and an outpatient center.
Anesthesia Fee
Charged separately by the anesthesiologist or certified nurse anesthetist, this covers administering and monitoring anesthesia throughout the procedure.
Pre-Operative Testing
Bloodwork, an EKG, or other pre-surgical clearance tests may be billed separately, especially if done at a different facility than your surgery.
Follow-Up Visits
Some practices bundle a post-operative check-up into the total price; others bill it separately. Always ask.
What's Usually NOT Included
- Prescription pain medication
- Time off work
- Transportation (you'll need someone to drive you home after anesthesia)
- Treatment for any complication requiring additional care
